Almost everyone has heard of how the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor in 1898 and helped bring on the Spanish American War.
Almost everyone has heard of how the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor in 1898 and helped bring on the Spanish American War. However, few folks know that
even today it is undetermined who was responsible for the ship’s destruction: Was it the Spanish? Was it the Cuban rebels who hoped to draw the US into war against Spain? Was it an
accidental internal explosion? The ship was later raised, the remains of her long dead crew recovered, and the masts removed and placed as memorials in Arlington National Cemetery and on the campus of the Naval Academy at Annapolis.
